Founded in 1921 as Mughalpura Technical College in Mughalpura, a suburb of Lahore, it later became McLean Engineering College, renamed in 1923 when the then Governor of Punjab, Sir It, was founded by Edward Douglas McLaughlin. The main building block, now called the main block. In 1932, he was affiliated to the Punjab University for a bachelor’s degree in electrical and mechanical engineering. In 1939, it was renamed as Punjab College of Engineering and Technology and the Civil Engineering degree was introduced in the college. At the time of partition, a part of the college was shifted to India, which is called East Punjab College of Engineering. In 1954, the Bachelor’s degree program in Mining Engineering was launched.
In 1962, it was established and renamed West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. In the 1960s, undergraduate programs in chemical engineering, oil and gas engineering, metallurgical engineering, architecture and urban planning were introduced. By the 1970s, it outnumbered scores of master’s degree programs in engineering, architecture, urban and regional planning, and related fields. Many Ph.D. Study programs were also started. A second campus of the university was established at Sahiwal in 1975, which was shifted to Taxila in 1978 and became an independent university in 1993 named University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila.
